Riding go karts can be a blast! Unfortunately, not everyone is great at it the first time they try. It can even be intimidating to attempt. However, with a few quick tips you can overcome your reservations and have a great time. You might even win a race or two!
1. Check out the competition
Before you take to the track, watch the races before you. You can learn how the track works, how the others take the turns, trouble areas in the track to watch out for, and good spots to accelerate or pass an opponent. You can also learn what tricks the others have for winning.
2. Get situated
When you get in the go kart, fasten your seat belt as tight as is comfortable. Snug is better than loose. Also scoot up as close to the steering wheel as you can. While it may feel awkward at first, this helps center your weight on the kart. Also, remember to make smooth movements while driving, whether turning the wheel, accelerating, or braking.
3. Let off the pedal
While the goal is to get around the track the fastest, sometimes pressing the pedal to the floor only makes you spin out of control in go karts. It is generally better to take wide turns than to try to cut them tight. If you feel the grip of the front tires missing a bit, let up on the accelerator and let the tires grip again. This lets you keep control.
4. Don’t aim for the barriers
It can be a lot of fun to ram into the track barriers or into other cars in your go kart, but doing so only slows you down. It is also potentially dangerous. By keeping clear of the obstacles on the course, you maintain your momentum and have a better chance of winning.
5. Have fun!
The most important rule to riding go karts is to have fun. Whether you are letting off some steam with pals or enjoying a family day out, keep in mind that competition is healthy, but the point of the experience is to enjoy yourself.
